What to consider in a Wheel Chair

There are many things in which you need to consider when buying or hiring a wheel chair. The whole point of a wheel chair is to allow the user to become more mobile. To do this the wheel chair needs to be strong, durable, reliable and easy to use. A cheap wheel chair is not always the best option, but then again you don't want to have to spend a fortune on a wheel chair. Here are just a few things in which you need to consider before buying or hiring a wheel chair.

1.) Storage
The first thing you need to consider before even testing out a wheelchair is storage. It is no use getting a wheel chair that is big and bulky and is always in the way. To prevent the wheel chair from becoming a pain and getting in the way it is best getting a collapsible or folding wheel chair. This means you can fold it down when not in use for easy storage and will make life easier when you want to place it in a boot of a car.

2.) Comfort
Some people could be sat in there wheelchair for hours. You therefore need a wheel chair that offers comfort and quality. A good comfortable wheel chair often has padded cushions, arm rests and moveable leg rests. It is no use getting a wheel chair where you can't rest your arms or legs otherwise your joints will soon be aching.

3.) Safety
Safety is essential. Before buying or hiring a wheel chair you must ensure it has passed all of the relevant safety checks. Good wheel chairs have good easy to access breaks and a strap or belt to hold you tightly but comfortably in the wheel chair.

4.) Weight
You need to consider the weight of the wheel chair as it will have to be lifted. A wheel chair that is light is desirable as you may need to lift it up steps, in to the car or on to the bus.

5.) Price
The price is also important. Before buying a wheel chair you should compare prices and see what offers are out there. A cheap wheel chair will have less features than a more expensive wheel chair. You need to consider how much you can afford. Hiring a wheel chair is always an alternative to buying one. Remember a cheap wheel chair is not always the best wheel chair but if it is too expensive you should shop elsewhere.

6.) Age of Chair
This will all depend on whether you are buying a new or second hand wheel chair. An older wheel chair may be heavier, less comfortable and may become rusty more easily. A newer chair will be more modern, which means it is probably easier to use and more comfortable but it depends on the price you have in mind.

7.) Long Term or Short Term
Finally you need to decide how long you will use the chair for. If it just for short term use you may be best hiring a wheel chair, if it is for long term use you may be best buying the wheel chair. Don't worry if your unsure how long the wheel chair will be used for as you can always hire the wheel chair and buy it at a further date.
